About us

Thank you for showing interest in us! We are ResiRiver, an Interreg North-West Europe project. Our goal? Creating resilient river systems by mainstreaming and upscaling Nature-based Solutions (NbS).

Who we are

We have a diverse group of partners from Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland and The Netherlands. Our partners represent national and local river management entities, environmental NGO’s and universities. Together, we are building a strong partnership that covers river systems in North-West Europe. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management serves as the lead partner.

“In ResiRiver, we are working on the transition process that is essential to allow river managers and stakeholders to use more NbS, and at the same time see the benefits of these solutions.”

Stanford Wilson ResiRiver project leader

The need for ResiRiver

While EU and national policies generally support NbS, there are still key obstacles to upscaling them across North-West Europe. These include a lack of technical knowledge, uncertainty about how to implement NbS, and hesitation to include them in new plans, policies, or daily operations. In many cases, stakeholders aren't fully involved, which makes implementation and long-term upkeep difficult. There's also limited awareness of the broader benefits NbS can bring, like biodiversity, recreation, inland shipping, as well as reducing flood and drought risks.

Overcoming barriers through a three-part approach

Build a strong foundation for mainstreaming NbS by collecting knowledge and experience from full-scale pilot sites on the Rhine, Meuse, Weser, Lys, Dromore, and Wantij rivers and insights from earlier work on the Rhone and Vesdre in NWE.

Share lessons learned through easily accessible training packages and live demonstrations for our partners as well as stakeholders.

Translate knowledge and experiences into practical, easily implementable action plans, guidelines and policy recommendations.

Looking ahead

Our project and partnerships will speed up the integration and upscaling of NbS through cross-border collaborations, using national best practices as a starting point. We work in a wide range of river systems in North-West Europe. Because these river systems across national borders, we navigate varying legal frameworks and governance structures. Our goal is to create a level playing field and make it easier to apply NbS in practice.
